I thoroughly enjoy reading Amish stories, and understand why they are so wildly popular. The characters are well developed, the story and plot lines excellently done. Apr 04, Christy Lockstein rated it really liked it.
Clara has resigned herself to living a quiet life in her Amish community. She finds fulfillment in her teaching job, but taking care of her demanding mother exhausts her strength. After being badly scarred by a fire as a child, Clara has largely been ignored by the men of Sugarcreek, an attitude her mother only reinforces by telling her that without physical beauty, she'll never catch a husband. Tim Graber has come to town to help out a cousin with farm duties, fulling expecting to marry Ruby Lee when he returns home to Indiana, but the quiet grace of Clara captures his heart and makes him reconsider the future.
Bonnet fiction is a rapidly growing genre, and Gray is a shining star in the movement. Her characters are always three-dimensional and her stories poignant and heart-warming. Clara is an unusual Amish character in that while she has strong faith, she also wants a life that fulfills her soul.
She isn't going to allow anyone to take her dreams away from her. The reader gets the impression that even without the romantic part of the book, this novel would still be a beautiful story about Clara's independence and learning to love herself. I can't wait to read the next in the series. I love reading about strong women and Clara Slabaugh certainly was that. Burned as a child with hot oil, she has undergone many surgeries but still carries scars on her face and arm.
No one in Sugarcreek seems to want to court her, so she becomes the school teacher, resigned to being alone for the rest of her life, caring for her aging mother. But when Tim Graber comes to Sugarcreek from Indiana to help on his uncle's farm, he meets Clara and an immediate bond is formed between them. Tim has a g I love reading about strong women and Clara Slabaugh certainly was that.
Tim has a girlfriend back in Indiana but what he feels for Clara is different than what he feels for Ruby. When Tim invites Ruby to visit, he realizes that she is not the woman for him and send her back to Indiana. Tim is able to see past Clara's scars deep into her heart which is kind and gentle.
Eventually the disappearance of two boys during a rain storm brings the community together, including Clara and Tim. Clara's unhappy mother comes around and offers to move in with one of Clara's married sisters so Clara and Tim can stay in Sugarcreek and farm the land as Tim wants to do. They work through all of these obstacles and agree to marry. This was a very heartwarming storm of strength, perseverance and love. Shelley has another winner here and I can't wait to start Autumn's Promise. Aug 11, J. Once again Shelley Shepard Gray has surprised me and I am so glad she did. I was so afraid this book would end in an unsatisfactory way but I was pleasantly surprised. Shelley has an astonishing talent. From the minute I picked the book up, I could not bear to put it down. Of course being a mother of two rambunctious kiddos, I had to put it down a few times but it amazed even me how quickly I would pick it right back up.
I also found myself feeling for Tim. He was so wrapped up in confusion about what to do with his feelings. Both of them had an uncanny knack for stumbling right before they got to the point of what should be said and I found that to be absolutely perfect. Young people have a habit of circling around their own thoughts and getting all mixed up when the rest of their life is on the line. Shelley captured that beautifully. God has truly blessed her with a wondrous talent and I find myself on pins and needles — just to get to the next book in this series… not to mention the next series.
DO NOT miss this book! Jan 10, Debbie rated it it was amazing.

Clara believes it is her duty to take care of her widow mother and does so unselfishly till she learns that her mother has been lying to her. I didn't much care for her mother till the end of the story. This book shows that sometimes things are the way they appear to be! It was a wonderful story and I am anxious to read book 3. Dec 14, Mayda rated it it was ok Shelves: christian , amish , romance. In this novel, Shelly Gray explores the feelings the protagonist has in coping in the Amish community. Badly scared as a child in a fire, Clara has resigned herself to caring for her demanding mother, earning a living teaching school, and being alone and lonely.
She has a rebellious streak that she is sometimes unable to rein in that causes her trouble with the elders of the community. A subplot concerning the trials of a young English woman round out the story.
While an interesting read, the story is predictable and leaves little to wonder about.
